Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 17, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 17, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News March 17, 1915 County Clerk Gardner received instructions this morning from Secretary of State Olcott at Salem that after April 1st, all stock brands must be registered with the state veterinarian instead of the county clerk, as at present. This change is embodied in a bill passed at the last season of the legislature. In the neighborhood of 350 owners of stock in Jackson County are affected by the change. The county clerk was also notified to strike from the registration books all voters not naturalized citizens. At the last election, a law was passed denying the vote to unnaturalized citizens. Up to this time, declaration of intentions to become citizens entitled them to a vote. Provision is made for the re-registering, if they since have become citizens.   ASHLAND, March 17 — Monday afternoon a fine and extra large Pullman tourist car went north, attached to No. 16. The coach was numbered but nameless, and every window was screened with an extra heavy iron mesh. It transpired that the car was a government one, used for the transportation of "undesirables," and it was amusing to note how some gave it a wide berth when its mission became known to the crowd of loafers on the depot platform. The car is personally conducted by a party of government officials who gather up at the big terminals those who seek to evade the federal immigration laws, or otherwise incur the penalty of deportation. Its visits are sporadic, and on this occasion it was being routed from San Francisco to Seattle.   Editorial: The Farmers' and Fruitgrowers' league is doing a valuable work in behalf of the producers of the valley, and their warning in regard to fighting animal pests should be heeded. Now is the time to begin the war upon digger squirrels, gophers, moles, rats, mice and other pests that do much to lessen the growers' profits. Every animal killed within the next few weeks means many less for the farmer to fight the coming summer, as spring is the season when they breed and multiply. The league has published the best methods of exterminating the predatory animals, recommended traps to use, given recipes for preparing food, and arranged to supply poisoned grain at wholesale prices. They have done everything except place the traps and the poison, and it is up to the farmer to do the rest.
