Phoenix girls bounce back, beat Henley PHOENIX -- After a tough four-point loss to North Valley in its Skyline Conference opener last Friday, the Phoenix girls basketball team was looking to bounce back. Jackson Sutton helped the Pirates take care of business with 14 points during a 51-42 win over Henley on Tuesday night. Phoenix picked up the win without the services of starting point guard Chelsea Clark, who went down with an ankle injury in the first half. Sophomore Maria Gonzalez carried the load the rest of the way, committing only three turnovers against Henley's pressure defense. "Maria played a very solid game for us," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "Henley really gets after you defensively and I thought she did a good job." The Pirates (4-6 overall, 1-1 Skyline) clung to a four-point lead heading into the final period, then used timely foul shooting by Tara Curtis to keep the lead secure. Curtis sank three of four free throws late to help hold off the Hornets, who lost starter Brooke Beeks midway through the fourth quarter to fouls. "That really hurt them," said Walker of Beeks fouling out. "She is one of their senior leaders and not having her in there hurt them down the stretch." Emily Mills led Henley with nine points and Beeks added seven. Gonzalez added 10 points to the Pirates' scoring attack and Curtis pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds. "This was a big win for us," said Walker. "After losing that first one to North Valley, the kids came out and really played hard. It's a big step in the right direction."
