Freshman lifts Loggers to big win over Prospect BUTTE FALLS � Sarah Matthews experienced her coming out at a crucial time in the season for Butte Falls girls basketball Tuesday. The talented 6-foot freshman post stepped up when the Loggers needed it most during a 62-36 victory over arch-rival Prospect. The victory avenges the Loggers (14-3, 8-1 Sky A) only division loss and gives them sole possession of first place. Prospect (13-4, 7-2 Sky A) entered the contest tied with Butte Falls for division leadership. North Lake trails by �-game. With Butte Falls starting post Elizabeth McLauchlan out with the flu, Matthews came off the bench to pull down 20 rebounds and score 14 points. "She hasn�t realized how good she can be yet," Butte Falls coach B.J. Rodgers said. "She really turned it for us. They didn�t have anyone to match up with her at all. She just controlled the backboards." Prospect suffered a serious set back when senior point guard Addie Stockebrand was lost for the game with a knee injury late in the first quarter. Butte Falls led 26-22 at halftime, but without Stockebrand�s leadership the Loggers outscored the Cougars 36-14 after the break. "When she (Stockebrand) went down, it took the wind out of their sails," said Rodgers. "She�s definitely an impact ball player." Lindsey Stockton caught fire for the Loggers in the third period, scoring eight of her game-high 16 points. The senior wing shot 8 of 15 from the field. Jessica Dunlap and substitute Brianna Smeltz did an excellent defensive job, limiting Prospect�s leading scorer Sarah Gordon to 14 points. "The Gordon girl is one of the best guards in the league," said Rodgers, "but without Addie (Stockebrand) there, we were able to wear her down." Boys Skyline A BUTTE FALLS 78, PROSPECT 60 � At Butte Falls, sophomore Jed Rowden sparked Butte Falls with 22 points on a 7-for-9 performance from 3-point territory as the Loggers ended a five-game losing streak to Prospect. Sophomore post David Hoel added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Loggers (4-13, 4-6 Sky A). Prospect�s Zach Gordon tallied a game-high 27 points. Josh Ward and Ryan King each hauled down seven rebounds for New Hope (12-8, 7-3 Sky A). Dave Matthews and Miles Hohnstein each scored 12 points for Brighton, winless in 10 Skyline A outings.
