An evening of Spanish guitar Denis Azabagic will perform classical selections and teach a class at Southern Oregon University Jefferson Classical Guitar Society will host a guitar concert featuring international performer Denis Azabagic. After listening to Azabagic, Spanish composer Anton Garcia Abril said: "I am sure that with the time, he is going to be one of the greatest guitarists of the world." The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Southern Oregon University's Music Recital Hall, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Azabagic performs around the globe, appearing as soloist with orchestras and holding his own recitals. In 1993, at age 20, he became the youngest winner of the international guitar competition Jacinto e Inocencio Guerrero, held in Madrid, Spain. Between the years 1992 and 1999, Azabagic won 24 prizes in international competitions, 11 of which were first prizes. He has written a book, "On Competitions," based on his experiences. The book is published by Mel Bay. Advertisement Azabagic has appeared as a guest performer in such venues as Masters of the Guitar at the Royal Concertgebouw, Netherlands; Radio France, Paris; Aix en Provence Festival, France; El Palau de la Musica, Valencia, Spain; Savannah on Stage and Omni Foundation, both in the United States. His performances have been broadcast live on radio and television in Europe and the United States. He has recorded six CDs for international labels, including Opera Tres, Cedille and Naxos, as well as two DVDs for the Mel Bay Company. Soundboard Magazine described Azabagic's playing as "virtually flawless and his technical facility is a joy to see as well as hear; increasingly I hear him mentioned in the same breath as John Williams." In keeping with his mission to share his knowledge of music making with others, Azabagic will conduct a master class at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, in the choral room of the SOU Music Building. The Jefferson Classical Guitar Society was founded in 2001. It is a public, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the classical guitar in all its forms throughout the State of Jefferson, covering much of Southern Oregon and Northern California. The intent of the society is to introduce people to the classical guitar as well as to indulge those who already enjoy it. This includes arranging performances and educational programs by visiting and local artists. While based primarily on an appreciation of the classical guitar, its technique and repertoire, the society is interested in related instruments, such as the lute and the vihuela. The society also is interested in other kinds of music that people like to hear or play on the classical guitar, such as flamenco, jazz, Latin and ragtime. Tickets to the concert are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors and $5 for students. Children under 12 are admitted free.
