Investigators hope someone will recognize the thieves or their truck and help police put an end to a string of break-ins targeting vehicles in affluent areas. The video — available with this story at www.mailtribune.com — shows a lowered, small pickup that police identified as a Dodge cruising along Creek View Drive and several neighboring streets around 4:45 a.m. Sunday. Three young men, possibly teenagers, wearing hoodies and backpacks got out and walked through the neighborhood, checking for unlocked vehicles they could ransack for valuables such as electronics, money, wallets, sunglasses, CDs and other items kept in cars, Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. The spree hit 13 vehicles along Creek View Drive and Alameda Street. Break-ins also were reported nearby on Century Way, Ashford Way, Sherwood Park Drive, La Loma Drive and Jessica Circle, but police are still investigating whether all of those are related, Budreau said. On Ashford Way, thieves broke out a car window to take a purse and wallet, he said. In most cases from the weekend — and from the previous weekend when thieves hit nearly 50 vehicles in another east Medford neighborhood just to the north, near Kerrisdale Ridge Drive — the cars targeted weren't locked. "They rely on people being complacent," Budreau said of the thieves. He noted they appear to be targeting more affluent neighborhoods, where residents don't see much crime and might be less likely to take simple precautions like locking vehicles parked in their driveways. The neighborhood hit last weekend, however, has a network of cameras that use infrared light to capture images at night. The homeowner association bought and installed the security cameras for the area in 2013, said Jerry Richardson, the owner of Video Pro Warehouse, the company that provided the cameras. Richardson provided a 25-minute video showing the suspicious truck cruising the area. At the 10:07-minute mark, there is a close-up of one suspect entering a compact vehicle, then at the 24:25-minute mark the suspects take off running after setting off a car alarm, Budreau said.
