Josephine, Klamath and Curry County voters hate supporting law enforcement. They have rolled out the red carpet for you to move to one of those counties and do your business. Jackson County does not want you. Please move! Dean Leffler Medford Support HB 3470 Scientists have understood the role greenhouse gases like CO2 and CH4 play in the warming of the planet for almost 200 years. It's basic physics. There is no scientific dissent. And like so many things in life, a little is good and too much is deadly. Our continued use of fossil fuels has now pushed us into greenhouse gas overload and symptoms are more noticeable: 2014 was the hottest year (globally) since measurements began. We are clearly at a pivotal point. Do we stop greenhouse gases so our children and their children can live? Or do we continue to promote greenhouse gases so we can live high on the hog for a few more years and the heck with the kids and a livable world? Oregon now has a shot at curtailing some of these excessive greenhouse gases. That hope is HB 3470, a bill that would put a cap on greenhouse gases and continue to adjust as need arises in the future. And while much more needs to be done, this bill offers a good solid start. If you have grandchildren or children you just might want to contact your state representatives and tell them to support HB 3470. Lee Lull Talent Grates are a hazard I'm concerned about these steel drain gates on the street where a bicycle wheel can slip through and throw the rider. Is the city aware of this hazard? People are killed running over these. Rex Zimmerman Medford Planning request ignored The May 16 cover story was about the acres left out of the Planning Department's recommendation for expansion of the urban growth boundary. The majority of residents of Star Lite Lane requested to be left out of the expansion, but our request was ignored. Star Lite is a quiet family neighborhood that the county Planning Department proposes should be converted into commercial and industrial uses. Since we still have significant farmland on three sides, it seems odd to cut out one small neighborhood for this zoning change. One of the criteria for the inclusion was supposed to be looking for larger parcels of land so that development would not occur as a patchwork, but a larger contiguous development. This does not seem to apply to the 13 houses on our lane; and this is an inequity which plainly ought to be remedied. Elena Broadway Medford There is hope There are so many stories about the terrible effects of mental illness. While these stories need to be told, we have to remember there is also hope and recovery.
