Will restaurant servers and others who share in tips be affected by the new, higher minimum wage? Will caregivers who work up to 24-hour shifts for private parties independent of retirement or care facilities benefit from the increase? — T.P., Ashland T.P., Oregon is one of the seven states (and Guam) that require employers to pay tipped employees the state's minimum wage. That rule does not change with the passage of Senate Bill 1532, which will gradually increase the state’s minimum wage from $9.25 to $14.75 inside Portland's urban growth boundary, $13.50 in midsize counties like ours and $12.50 in rural areas by 2022. In answer to your second question, domestic service employees, such as cooks and housekeepers, must be paid at least minimum wage. However, Oregon's minimum-wage laws include exemptions for domestic service employees who provide companionship services, which can include meal preparation, bed-making and similar household chores, in a family home, said Charlie Burr, a spokesman for Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries, in an email. “The new law does not change these exemptions, but rather increases the wage rates for existing minimum-wage workers,” he said.
