South bangs out 18-1 win, claims split with GP GRANTS PASS -- The host Cavemen had every right to entertain thoughts of a sweep in Friday's Southern Oregon Conference baseball doubleheader. Grants Pass shook up South Medford starter Tony Conklin with six runs in the second inning of Game 1, including two two-run homers, and eventually walked away with a 7-2 triumph. The Cavemen quickly took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2, but this time the Panthers would not go quietly. South Medford scored 18 unanswered runs over the next four innings to earn a split with an 18-1 win in five innings. "They banged the ball pretty hard and chased Tyler York," Grants Pass coach Stacy Morgan said of the Panther attack against his Game 2 starter. "It just started to mount and we couldn't stop the bleeding." The split helped South improve to 6-6 in league play, while Grants Pass dropped to 9-12 overall and 3-9 in SOC action. Conklin gained a measure of revenge with a two-run homer to highlight South's eight-run second inning of Game 2. David Thrapp had a two-run single in that inning, while Matt Skundrick added a two-run double. Skundrick also shined on the mound for South in the nightcap, limiting Grants Pass to five hits in five innings. "(Matt) Skundrick pitched very well," said Morgan. "We had a kid pitch very well in Game 1 (Brady Howe) and they had a kid pitch well in Game 2." South's Ryan Heil and Brett Haag each had two hits, two runs and three RBIs in the nightcap, while Josh Tompkins had two hits and three runs and Thrapp had two hits and two RBIs. York and Nick Tomasini each had two-run homers to pace Grants Pass in the first game, with Derrick Draper, Brian Richard, Tomasini and Brant Minor each chipping in two hits for the Cavemen. MAZAMA 12-10, LAKEVIEW 2-5 -- At Klamath Falls, the Vikings picked up strong performances from several players in sweeping a Skyline Conference doubleheader. Tyler Starkey and Tyler Juhl each had three hits and two RBIs for Mazama in the first game, with Kyle Blank, Brendan Quirke, Jake Nelson and Jayson Nelson each chipping in two hits. Blank had a team-high three RBIs in Game 1, while Jake Nelson had 13 strikeouts to subdue Lakeview. Jake Nelson added three hits and four RBIs in the nightcap, while Eric McDaniel and Juhl each had two hits for Mazama (15-6, 15-2 Skyline). Softball LAKEVIEW 6-10, MAZAMA 1-6 -- At Lakeview, Michelle Johnson and Rachel Manibusan keyed the Honkers in a Skyline Conference sweep. Johnson picked up the win in both games, rapped two hits in both games and collected four RBIs in the nightcap for Lakeview (13-9, 11-6 Skyline). Johnson had eight strikeouts in five innings in holding down Mazama in Game 1. In the second game, Manibusan scored four runs and had three hits, including a solo home run in the sixth inning. Girls Tennis SOUTH MEDFORD 8, MAZAMA 0 --At Klamath Falls, South Medford registered its third victory of the season in 10 matches by overpowering Mazama in Thursday's non-league match. Stephanie Cohee registered one of the more impressive performances for the Panthers. Normally a doubles player, Cohee cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kate Robinson at No. 3 singles.
