Mustangs win 11th straight BEAVERTON - Teams playing on the road aren't supposed to win. Somewhere along the way, however, that concept wasn't passed on to the Medford Mustangs. verbose The local American Legion squad won its 11th straight game Thursday - all coming on the road - with an 8-5 victory over Robinson Construction. The streak began with two wins at Central Point, and the ensuing nine have included wins at Corvallis, Portland, The Dalles, Hermiston and now Beaverton. "We're playing a lot better," said Mustangs general manager Don Schneider. "We had a few defensive lapses today, but it's our 11th game since last Friday so that's understandable." Medford (24-13) will be in search of its 12th straight today when the Mustangs play at Redmond. Travis Dunlap helped get the Mustangs off on the right foot with a leadoff homer in the second inning. His seventh bomb of the season clanked off the metal scoreboard deep in right field. The Mustangs added three more runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead before Robinson Construction chipped away at its deficit. The team made up of Westview High players scored five unanswered runs before finally being undone by two Mustang runs over the final two innings. Rob Folsom led the Medford attack with three hits in five at-bats, while Tony Conklin, Evan McArthur and Dunlap each had two hits. Brent Kircher picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing one earned run and six hits over five innings of work. Matt Skundrick nailed down his first save by retiring all six batters he faced. Robinson Construction took advantage of five Medford errors, with only two of the Beaverton team's runs pinned to a Mustang pitcher. ROSEBURG PEPSI 13-6, NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 5-5 - At Roseburg, North Medford's Russ Vandell went 5-for-7 in the non-league American Legion A doubleheader loss Wednesday at Legion Field. In the opener, the Mavericks (9-15-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. North used two hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error to account for the runs. Beau Hovland provided a two-run single in the inning. Vandell went 3-for-4 in Game 1. Brett Timmerman's two-run double highlighted a Mavericks' three-run first inning in the nightcap. Vandell, Timmerman and Chris Brewington each had two hits in the second game for North. DISTRICT 6 LITTLE LEAGUE TOURNAMENT - The Medford American Red All-Stars were tied 2-2 in the top of the second inning with Ashland when the game was suspended because of rain in the boys 9-10-year-old District 6 tournament at the Medford American Little League complex. Undefeated Ashland needs one more win to advance to the state tournament. The game will resume where it ended at 10 a.m. today. If Medford wins, the Americans will force a final game immediately following the earlier contest.
