CRIME Burglars try to steal safe from church office Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 16, 2015 at 2:09 PM Updated Mar 16, 2015 at 4:17 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 16, 2015 at 2:09 PM Updated Mar 16, 2015 at 4:17 PM » Social News Someone broke into a Medford church over the weekend but didn't get far before apparently abandoning a heavy safe in the sanctuary. Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said officials at Ascension Lutheran Church, 675 Black Oak Drive, at first reported a safe — 2 feet by 2 feet by 5 feet — had been stolen from the office. It contained several gift cards, petty cash and various other paperwork. An office chair also had been taken, and several cabinets had been opened, with items strewn about the office, they said. Church officials later found the safe, unopened, resting in the sanctuary. None of the contents appear to be missing, they said. "No one was here, fortunately," office manager Carla Hutchins said. "We're doing OK. We're happier now that we have the safe." A church official reported the break-in to Medford police at 6 a.m. Sunday, March 15. Several window screens had been removed, a door was forced open and a window on an office door was shattered.  Police said the crime occurred sometime between 3 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday. It's the first time a break-in has occurred at the church in its 50-plus-year history. The burglars left a bit of a mess behind for the church to clean up, but the building is insured. No decisions have been made on whether extra security measures will be implemented, Hutchins said. Anyone with information about the attempted burglary should contact Medford police at 541-770-4784.
