But even that lower figure seems too high, based on what I know that teachers get paid locally. Does that figure include benefits or is the average Medford teacher really making $59,000 a year, plus benefits? — Thomas, Jacksonville There seem to be a lot of moving parts involved in determining that average, Thomas, but the final, final answer from the Medford School District is that the average salary for teachers is $58,000. Well, that's the final, final answer unless you include extra pay for duties such as coaching, in which case the average is $59,969. Those numbers may be higher than you would expect because the district has so many longtime teachers who are drawing the district's maximum salary, says Brad Earl, Medford schools chief financial officer. "About half of our teachers are at the top of their pay scale," Earl said. Each teacher also costs the district, on average, $4,500 per year for Social Security and Medicare, $14,800 for retirement through PERS and $14,000 for medical benefits. When you add that all up, excluding extra-duty pay, the average teacher costs the district $91,300, which is about $1,300 less than the statewide average. Earl noted that number could change when the 2011-12 budget is adopted, depending on how many senior teachers or new teachers are dropped by retirements or layoffs and whether there are any changes in benefit costs. The district's maximum salary for teachers ranges between $63,848 and $67,231, depending on degree level. The minimum pay in Medford is $33,827 for a first-year teacher with a bachelor's degree and no additional credit hours. Currently, only seven teachers earn the lowest salary. The top end salary, $67,231, is for a teacher with 14 years or more of experience and a doctoral degree. Of the district's 576 teachers, only two have doctoral degrees, while 371 teachers have master's degrees. Another 217 have bachelor's degree.
