The Spokane, Wash.-based utility's per-share income for the fourth quarter was 51 cents and $3.10 for all of 2014. Avista had forecast fourth-quarter earnings of between 52 and 57 cents per share. CEO Scott Morris called 2014 a transformational year with the sale of Ecova Inc. and acquisition of Alaska Electric Light and Power Co. "These are significant milestones for our company," Morris said. The sale of Ecova netted the company $69.7 million and the Alaska Electric Light and Power acquisition contributed $3.2 million toward the company's overall 2014 earnings, which Morris said were "slightly higher than originally expected" because of higher customer use for the first nine months, lower power supply costs and lower interest costs. Avista said it also benefited from recouping costs from capital expenditures on its infrastructure in 2013. However, fourth-quarter earnings fell short, Morris said, because demand declined along with milder temperatures and Avista was mandated to set aside part of its earnings for Idaho customers. "Weather was significantly warmer than the prior year and warmer than normal, which reduced heating (usage)," Morris said.
