But, as usual, there’s a lot more out there — from superheroes to sequels to action spectacles — if you happen to be young(ish) and male. This year, though, the studios also are throwing a few bones to those of you who were young(ish) and male three decades ago by rebooting the “Terminator,” “Jurassic Park,” “Mad Max,” “Poltergeist” and “Vacation” franchises. Families can look forward to the “Despicable Me” prequel “Minions” and Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out.” And for the ladies, there’s always the beefcake and body glitter of “Magic Mike XXL.” Here’s a look at what’s opening over the next few months at the multiplexes, although, as always, release dates are subject to change. May 1 A peacekeeping program turns deadly when Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) accidentally unleashes a technological terror (James Spader), causing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to re-assemble, in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” May 8 A straight-laced cop (Reese Witherspoon) tries to keep the widow (Sofia Vergara) of a drug boss safe from gangsters and crooked cops in the comedy “Hot Pursuit.” An unpopular guy (Jack Black) tries to persuade the coolest guy (James Marsden) in his high school class to go to their reunion with him in the comedy “The D Train.” May 15 Director George Miller resurrects the legend of Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), who still sounds more like an accountant than a post-apocalyptic warrior, in “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Beca (Anna Kendrick), Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) and the rest of the Barden Bellas return in “Pitch Perfect 2.” May 22 A disillusioned genius (George Clooney) and a teen scientist (Britt Robertson) seek answers in Disney’s secretive “Tomorrowland,” from “Lost’s” Damon Lindelof and “The Incredibles” director Brad Bird. Is there still enough room in those newfangled flat-screen TVs for a young girl to get sucked inside? We’ll find out when another family’s home is overrun by evil spirits in “Poltergeist.” May 29 When the West Coast is rockin’, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) comes knockin’ for his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) and daughter (Alexandra Daddario) in the earthquake extravaganza “San Andreas.” A military contractor (Bradley Cooper) reconnects with a former love (Rachel McAdams) and falls for an Air Force watchdog (Emma Stone) in “Aloha,” from writer-director Cameron Crowe. June 3 Actor Vinnie Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his boys Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon) move from HBO to the big screen, along with Ari (Jeremy Piven) and Lloyd (Rex Lee), in “Entourage.” June 5 With top CIA agents (Jude Law, Jason Statham) sidelined, a deskbound analyst (Melissa McCarthy) goes undercover in the action comedy “Spy,” from director Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids”). Psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to help a family whose daughter has been targeted by something supernatural in the horror prequel “Insidious — Chapter 3.” June 12 Considering that every encounter has ended in tragedy, you’d think mankind would learn that cloning dinosaurs isn’t a great idea. Since they haven’t, Chris Pratt stars in “Jurassic World.” June 19 A young girl’s emotions — Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) — are the stars of “Inside Out,” the latest animated offering from Disney/Pixar. Three friends go from geeks to gangstas in the Sundance hit “Dope,” which looks like it’s equal parts John Hughes and John Singleton. June 26 Thunder Buddies John (Mark Wahlberg) and Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) return for more filthy high jinks in “Ted 2.” The U.S. president (Samuel L. Jackson) crash lands in Finland and must rely on a 13-year-old boy to help him evade kidnappers in “Big Game.” A grieving boy bonds with the military dog that accompanied his late brother in Afghanistan in “Max.” Five-year-old cancer patient Miles Scott’s wish becomes a global sensation in the documentary “Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World.” July 1 Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is sent by John Connor (Jason Clarke) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke), but he ends up in a different timeline in “Terminator: Genisys,” which marks the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mike (Channing Tatum) takes his man thong out of storage for a series of farewell-to-stripping performances in “Magic Mike XXL.” July 10 Those little yellow mumblers Kevin, Stuart and Bob head to 1960s London, seeking to serve supervillain Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock), in the animated “Minions.” Twenty years after an actor was killed during a high school play, students try to honor him by restaging the production, with disastrous results, in the horror tale “The Gallows.” July 17 The Marvel Cinematic Universe gets a bit smaller with “Ant-Man,” in which a master thief (Paul Rudd) gains the ability to shrink in size while increasing in strength. After years of laughing at monogamy, a magazine writer (Amy Schumer) thinks about settling down with her latest interview subject (Bill Hader) in the comedy “Trainwreck,” from director Judd Apatow. July 24 When aliens attack Earth in the form of classic video game characters, the American president (Kevin James) calls on his best friend, a former video game champion (Adam Sandler), to save the world in the action comedy “Pixels.” When the girl next door (Cara Delevingne) goes missing, a high school senior (Nat Wolff) and his friends set out on an adventure to find her in “Paper Towns,” adapted from the novel by John Green (“The Fault in Our Stars”). A washed-up boxer (Forest Whitaker) takes a struggling fighter (Jake Gyllenhaal) under his wing in the drama “Southpaw,” from director Antoine Fuqua and “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter. July 31 The “Holiday Road” beckons once again as Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) packs up his wife (Christina Applegate) and kids and embarks on a cross-country road trip to Wally World, with a stop to see Clark (Chevy Chase) and Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo) along the way, in “Vacation.” A run-in with a former classmate (writer-director Joel Edgerton) turns the lives of a married couple (Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall) upside down in the psychological thriller “The Gift.” With the IMF still disbanded, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team (Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) battle a network of special agents in “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.” In 1996, Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) spends five days interviewing novelist David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel) in the Sundance favorite “The End of the Tour.” A dying wealthy man (Ben Kingsley) has his consciousness transferred to the body of a healthy younger man (Ryan Reynolds) in the sci-fi thriller “Self/Less.” Aug. 7 “The Fantastic Four” gets a lot younger with “Whiplash’s” Miles Teller as Mr. Fantastic, Michael B. Jordan as The Human Torch, Kate Mara as Invisible Girl and Jamie Bell as The Thing. A rock star (Meryl Streep) returns home to reconnect with her family in the comedy “Ricki and the Flash,” from director Jonathan Demme. An armored-truck driver (Zach Galifianakis) steals $17 million in the action comedy “Masterminds,” co-starring Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis. Aug. 14 Revisit the time before Ice Cube ran “Jump Street” and Dr. Dre made your headphones with the N.W.A. biopic “Straight Outta Compton.” The CIA’s Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) team up to take down an international organization of criminals in “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” based on the 1960s TV series. The players on a child’s foosball table come to life in the animated “Underdogs.” Aug. 21 A mother (Shannyn Sossamon) and her 9-year-old sons are haunted in the horror sequel “Sinister 2.” The skills and memories of a CIA agent are transplanted into a felon to prevent an even bigger crime in “Criminal,” starring Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones.
