The blaze was reported at 2:22 a.m. in front of Nature’s Pet Market at Medford Center. Medford Fire-Rescue Capt. Ron Nelson said four engines responded to a reported structure fire, but crews found out they were actually headed to something a bit different on the way. “En route we get updated information that it was at least one, if not multiple, Porta Potties,” Nelson said. Crews arrived on scene to see it was three toilets: two regular-sized and one larger one for people with disabilities. All three were fully engulfed, spitting smoke and fire and smothering the parking lot with the stench of burning plastic. No people were present. Crews had the fires knocked down in about 10 minutes. The three units were destroyed, amounting to about $4,000 in damage, fire officials said. The portable toilets had been delivered Friday in anticipation of Paws for a Cause, a pet fair and dog walk sponsored by Nature's Pet Market as a fundraiser for Friends of the Animal Shelter, store manager Kate Gray said. Organizers arrived Sunday morning to find the burned-out remains of the restrooms surrounded by caution tape, but Cooks Inc. of Central Point delivered new portable toilets in time for the festivities later that day, Gray said. Sunday's event included vendor booths, a two-mile dog walk and dog agility demonstrations. The cause of the fire isn't known, but Nelson said the incident is suspicious in nature. Medford police said they received a witness report of a group of teenagers believed to be about 14 to 16 seen walking toward the scene and laughing. “(They) then saw the emergency lights shortly thereafter,” Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. “This is, based on my experience, a juvenile-type crime. I really wouldn’t put it past kids to be involved in that.” The case remains under investigation.
