Mazama rallies to beat Hidden Valley MURPHY -- Early in the third quarter Hidden Valley had an opportunity to take a 14-point lead on Mazama. The Mustangs didn't capitalize and Mazama came back to pin a 34-27 loss on the Mustangs in Skyline Conference football on Friday night. Hidden Valley seemed to seize the momentum when Willy Isley returned the second half kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown to break a 20-20 halftime tie. On Mazama's next possession, Ryan Wilson recovered a fumble at Vikings' 23. The Mustangs had the ball first down inside Mazama's 1 but came away empty. The blown opportunity proved costly as Mazama rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. A blocked punt by Mazama's Lance Wagner with 8:31 remaining in the game set up the Vikings' winning score. Mazama marched 45 yards in four plays, with Tyler Starkey covering the final 14 yards on a quarterback draw with 7:07 left in the game. Hidden Valley quarterback Matt Kennedy completed 19 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns. Isley was the Mustangs' leading receiver with 11 catches for 116 yards. It wasn't until Jesse Smith dashed 14 yards to paydirt in the fourth quarter -- his third touchdown of the night -- that Rogue River sewed up its second Skyline Conference win of the season. Chad Longacre scored five touchdowns for the winless Honkers, including three in the second quarter as the Honkers closed to within 34-26 at the half. The Chiefs' lone counter in the second period was a 70-yard kickoff return by Jeff Jentsch. Rogue River had 432 yards in total offense. Paisley, trailing by six points, had the ball at the Loggers' 20-yard line after a pass interference penalty, but Smith sacked quarterback Shaylon Shuffield to end the contest. It was Smith's sixth tackle of the game from his end position to go with six assists. Smith blocked a third-quarter punt and recovered it in the end zone for what proved to be the Loggers' winning score. Smith, normally an end on offense, was moved to halfback because two Logger players were ineligible. Smith accounted for 254 of the Loggers' 480 yards in offense. Smith caught three passes, including a 75-yard screen pass for the Loggers' first touchdown, for 162 yards and rushed 10 times for a team-high 92 yards. Butte Falls sophomore Nick Rodgers rushed for two touchdowns and caught four passes for 108 yards. Rodgers also had six tackles and nine assists from his middle linebacker position. Howard scored on a 60-yard run in the second quarter, then threw a 9-yard scoring toss to David Malloy in the third period.
