The blaze was reported around 5:30 p.m. at a two-story house in the 5500 block of Rogue River Highway, just southeast of town. Crews from the Rogue River Fire District and Evans Valley Fire responded, and Oregon State Police shut down the highway as a crowd gathered and thick smoke billowed into the air. Louie Grosse stood down the street, watching his house burn. Grosse said he is in the middle of a divorce and lived at the house with his 19-year-old daughter, Mariah Dahlen. He was working on his car when the fire started, and he had grease on his hands. No one was hurt in the blaze, and Grosse said he thinks his two cats survived. "I think they got out," he said. Grosse said there were many things of value to him in the house. "I've got my Dad's and Mom's ashes upstairs," he said, appearing dazed. Rogue River Fire Chief Jim Price said the fire started in the area of the kitchen but the cause hasn't been determined. He said the house was destroyed. Price said crews arrived at the scene eight minutes after the blaze was reported and discovered that a power line had fallen on the side of the house. "That became one large danger zone," he said. Most crews left the scene by 10 p.m. but a handful of firefighters stayed there until early Monday morning. They were briefly called back to the home Monday when a couple of hot spots flared up. The house was not insured, and a fund has been set up for Grosse and his family. Anyone wishing to donate can visit any Umpqua Bank and ask to contribute to the "Louie Grosse House Fire Fund." Donations can also be made through New Beginnings Christian Center in Rogue River. Shelli Spencer of New Beginnings said Grosse is a member of the church. She said Grosse and his family were able to enter the house briefly Monday and salvage a few belongings. "They were able to get some things, a clock that grandpa had made and some baby pictures," she said. The church is accepting both money and household items for the family.
