Helen was born December 2, 1914 in Whittier, Calif. to Eugene Raymond and Coral Rose Harris. Helen was proud of the fact that she descended from Mayflower Pilgrim, Edward Doty. Soon after her birth, she and her family moved back to their homestead in Harney County, Ore. where her parents had settled in 1912. Helen had several fond memories of those homesteading days including traveling by wagon with her mother, a registered nurse, to tend to the medical needs of the many families homesteading the high desert at that time. When homesteading proved to be unprofitable, Helen's father was forced to seek employment in the city. The family moved to the railroading town of Dunsmuir, Calif., then to Ashland, Ore. and finally to Portland, Ore. where her father worked for the then new Grayhound bus company. Helen graduated from Jefferson High School in Portland and obtained a teaching degree from Oregon Normal School, now Western Oregon University.. She was teaching at Dalles, Ore. when she met her husband, Bert Caster. They were married in 1939. WWII took Bert around the United States for training and then to the European Theater. Helen was a true member of the "Greatest Generation," keeping the home fires burning while Bert was overseas. Her son John was born right at the beginning of the war and her son, Todd was born shortly after Bert left for Germany. After the war, the family moved to the Rogue Valley where Bert took over the family farm. Helen taught in the Central Point School system for several years. They retired to Jacksonville where Helen enjoyed the history of the area and volunteering in several living history programs. Helen was always interested in young people and enjoyed working with them. She attributed her long life with always being interested in all people and especially youth. Helen and Bert enjoyed travel and visited Europe and several places in Oregon, Hawaii, and across the United States. Helen especially enjoyed visiting Harney County and the area around her parents' old homestead. Helen will be missed by her family and her many friends who continued to keep in touch and visit her at Rogue Valley Manor. She is survived by her sons, John and his wife, Cozette and Todd and his wife, Claudia of McMinnville, Ore., as well as 7 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces who all loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert; her parents, and her brother, Dale. A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery.. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Rogue Valley Manor, Medford, Oregon. Memorial contributions can be made to the Rogue Valley Manor employee scholarship fund, Youth for Christ, or any youth-oriented group. Arrangements are by Conger~Morris Funeral Home, 541-772-7111.
