The National Weather Service reported a strong weather front will start moving toward the Oregon Coast Tuesday. Tuesday night, it's expected to move inland along and past the Coastal Range, bringing moderate to heavy precipitation to parts of Southern Oregon and Northern California. Medford could receive more than a half-inch of rain, with double that expected to fall over Crater Lake. Just under an inch is expected to fall on the Sexton Pass. A whopping two and a half inches is expected in Brookings. Just south of the Rogue Valley, Yreka could receive six-tenths of an inch of rain, while close to an inch could fall at Mt. Shasta, but Tuesday winds could also spell trouble for Siskiyou County from a fire standpoint. The Weather Service has instituted a red flag warning from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday because of the winds and dry conditions that could kick start more fires. The notice covers central Siskiyou County including the Shasta Valley, Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Cascades mountains east and south to Mt. Shasta, and Modoc County except for Surprise Valley. The Klamath Basin and Fremont-Winema National forest are also included in the watch. "South to southwest winds are expected to increase ahead of this front with gusty ridge winds and strong winds in the Shasta Valley and across the east side Tuesday, and continue on the far east side into Wednesday morning ahead of the front with low relative humidities," the advisory reads. Those winds are expected to reach up to 30 mph with 40 mph gusts The strongest winds are expected to hit the Weed area, site of the Boles fire that tore through the town and destroyed 150 homes and eight commercial buildings, with other damage reported on four additional homes and three commercial buildings. That 479-acre fire has been fully contained, fire officials said. The Wednesday and Thursday rains should provide ample fire suppression, but could also results in rock slides, mudslides and flooding on burn-scarred areas blackened by recent blazes. Over the weekend, a sizable mudslide — kickstarted by the possible shift of a glacier that contained a large pocket of water — gushed down Mt. Shasta's southeast side and closed two roads.
