I mean, both are pleasant-smelling liquids that seem to be pretty gentle on the skin. Is this one of those "Emperor's New Clothes" situations where we've all been duped into buying two bottles? How exactly are they formulated differently? — Just sign me 'Mr. Bubble,' via email In the shower, we all wear something similar to what the fabled Emperor wore in the Hans Christian Andersen story, but you'll find no exposé undermining the body wash industry here. According to a 2012 article in the Cosmetics & Toiletries trade magazine, hair care is more complicated than body care, and makes clear that hair cannot be cleansed with soap without damaging the hair. Shampoos were first developed because soaps caused hair to be rough and damaged. Shampoos are engineered with the following criteria, according to the trade magazine: proper detergency without degreasing, delicate and rich bubbling, easy rinsing, good finish after washing hair, minimal irritation to skin and eyes, low toxicity and good biodegradability. What about using shampoo as a body wash? The results can feel a bit slimy. That's because in addition to pH levels being different for our manes, they're formulated differently and often contain ingredients that aren't needed for skin — be it conditioners or zinc pyrithione if you're using Head and Shoulders. Among the two items, pH levels in shampoos skew slightly more acidic, ranging between 4 and 6. Body washes range about 5 to 6.5. Send questions to “Since You Asked,” Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
