FAST FOOD Grants Pass In-N-Out needs more room Comment By Grants Pass Daily Courier MailTribune.com By Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Feb. 18, 2016 at 4:41 PM By Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Feb. 18, 2016 at 4:41 PM » Social News A representative of In-N-Out Burger told the Grants Pass City Council Wednesday night it needs more room to build one of its wildly popular restaurants and is now looking at a site adjacent to its original choice. The company is negotiating to buy the old Royal Vue Motel property on Northeast Morgan Lane, where the motel is being demolished. The City Council, meanwhile, approved In-N-Out's appeal of sign codes on the property it owns next door at 124 N.E. Morgan Lane, allowing supports for the former Shell station sign to stay up for three years. "I wish I had something more substantive and exciting than a sign code appeal," Jim Locking of In-N-Out told the City Council. "But the piece of property we currently own which was the Shell station … unfortunately it is not large enough to build an In-N-Out." Locking said once the motel is gone, In-N-Out would go through a site plan review to build a restaurant. In-N-Out, with headquarters in Southern California, opened its first Oregon restaurant next to the Rogue Valley Mall in Medford last summer to much fanfare. Locking confirmed speculation In-N-Out bought the Shell station property in Grants Pass in the same transaction in which it bought the Medford property. The two 80-foot posts once supported a 160-square foot Shell sign that could be seen by travelers on nearby Interstate 5. Meanwhile the Royal Vue property sold in December for $1 million to Morgan Lodging LLC. Crews have been pulling garbage and junk out of the motel the past few months, dealing with asbestos. The time frame for demolition is uncertain. In the 1960s and '70s the Royal Vue Motel was a popular destination, and hosted famous movie stars such as John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn and Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams). The motel later became the Wild River Inn and slowly deteriorated, becoming more of a short-term apartment facility than a motel.
