It's a way to get something back. Southern Oregon University's president is among the newest faces on the board of directors for Community Works, one of Jackson County's largest social service agencies. She was elected Wednesday evening to the 12-member board and will start her three-year term in September. "I really wanted to work with a social service organization that touches many, many lives of people in the community," Zinser said. Set to retire from SOU later this summer, Zinser said she plans to participate in Community Works' volunteer training in order to work hands-on with clients. Community Works covers a wide-range of services, including shelter and counseling for homeless teens and battered women. The nonprofit organization has a more than 100 employees and a budget of approximately $5 million. On a personal level, Zinser said she has long supported funding services for battered women and children. She said she considered turning down all new invitations to sit on committees and boards immediately following her retirement but couldn't pass up Community Works' bid. "This was the one that really got to my heartstrings," she said. "I want it for what it can give back to me." Zinser will end five years as head of SOU on Aug. 31. Her successor is Mary Cullinan, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. But Zinser will continue working part-time in Oregon higher education. She said she will help design approaches to bolster student learning outcomes as part of a project with the office of the Oregon University System chancellor.
