McCandless co-player of the year in SCL By KRISH HENRY Christine McCandless provided a little bit of everything for the Cascade Christian girls basketball team, and her efforts were rewarded recently by the Southern Cascade League coaches. McCandless and Hollis Bailey of Lost River were chosen co-players of the year in the SCL and named to the all-league first team. "Hollis is a great player and Christine is a good player, too," Cascade Christian coach Loren King said of the MVP voting. "It kind of depends on who did what against what team. When they played against each other, it was pretty much a draw." McCandless played in the state tournament three of her four years with the Challengers and was a second-team all-league selection last season as a junior. The 5-foot-10 post averaged 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals, three blocks and two assists per game this season. "She's been playing for us since she was a freshman, and as a three-year varsity starter brought a lot of overall leadership to our team," King said of McCandless. "She's just had a great attitude and work ethic for us these past four years." Mike Kenyon of Lost River was named the league's coach of the year. Also named to the first team were Cascade Christian's Kelly Clarke, Krista Nieraeth of Bonanza, Tana Ross of Lost River and Lacie Depue of Gilchrist. Clarke's numbers were equally as impressive as McCandless, with the 5-10 junior averaging 13 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, three steals and two assists per game. "We call them our bookends because their stats are so similar and because they both provide the same kind of work ethic and leadership quality," said King. "Kelly has always been a competitive player and has done a great job for us since coming to us her sophomore year." McCandless and Clarke helped guide Cascade Christian to an upset of defending champion City Christian to open the Class 2A state tournament before the Challengers (21-9, 8-2 SCL) bowed out with two straight losses. St. Mary's snagged two all-league selections, with Shawna Jackson named to the second team and Lani Brophy receiving honorable mention. Katie Longan, a 5-5 senior guard for Cascade Christian, also received honorable mention.
