She was fifth of ten children. The family moved back to Indiana and Gertie was raised and graduated High School in South Bend and she was also employed as a bookkeeper at a department store. Gertrude married Francis Vander Heyden and they had a daughter, June. Army Staff Sgt. Vander Heyden was killed in action on February 6, 1945 during the liberation of the Philippines. Gertrude received his posthumously awarded Silver Star for gallantry in action and his Purple Heart. Gertrude married Robert (Bob) Davey on April 4, 1947 after he returned from his deployment as a U.S. Navy Corpsman assigned to the U.S.S. Meriwether APA203 and was on the beach during the invasion of Okinawa and was later involved in the occupation of Japan and the medical treatment of civilians. Gertie and Bob had a daughter, Laura. Bob adopted June because, as he told the judge, he wanted them to be a family and most importantly because he loved her. Bob and Gertie moved their family to Oregon and lived in Portland, North Bend and Sherwood before settling in Medford in 1962. In addition to being a Homemaker and Mom, Gertie worked at the Harry & David bakery for many years. Bob and Gertie and the girls loved to travel, boat and fish. They took visiting relatives on tours of their new State. Gertie and Bob doted on their grandsons, Steven Buck of Salem and David Buck of Medford. Gertrude was able to enjoy her great grandchildren for several years. Bob passed away in 1996 and Gertie lost "the love of my life." Gertrude was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Lucille, Frieda, Ellen and Dorothy; and brothers, Leonard, Robert, Nelson and Virgil. Gertrude joined them Monday, August 10, 2015. Gertrude is survived by her brother, Dale (Audrey) of Tucson, Ariz.; her daughters, June Buck (partner Willie Beck), and Laura Vencill (Gary) of Eugene; her grandson, Steve Buck and his children, Gabriel and Julia (wife Rebecca and her daughter Grace); grandson, Dave (Darlene) Buck and their son, Robert; her sons, Scot and Jesse and his son, Tyler. Gertrude's family would like to thank all the medical and assistance people that aided her in her last years, especially the staff at Barnett Woods senior living facility and Ashley Manor memory care unit on Brookhurst in Medford. A ceremony was held Monday, Aug 17th at the Eagle Point National Cemetery where Gertie was laid to rest with Bob.
