Ashland Ski Area for the day. Management made the official call at 7 a.m., as wind gusts pushed lift chairs to the point where they almost contacted the lift towers. Wind gusts of up to 70 mph were predicted for later today. Mt. Ashland Ski Area General Manager Hiram Towle said the decision was a "very easy" call to make. "We are very upset over the need to close, but guest safety is our number one priority," Towle said in a news release. "The team worked through the decision methodically, considering all possible scenarios, and not one of them would allow safe operation of the lifts." The park is expected to reopen at 9 a.m. Monday. A wind advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. today, with the strongest activity expected in the valley's south end. About 3 inches of new snow had fallen on the snow park's slopes over 24 hours by noon today. Crater Lake saw close to 4 inches, and about 2 inches fell on nearby Annie Springs. Rain soaked parts of the lower elevations across the Rogue Valley. From noon Saturday to noon Sunday, more than an inch had fallen east of Ashland, with about seven-tenths to an inch around town, according to National Weather Service data. Medford saw about four-fifths of an inch, and an area northwest of Gold Hill saw about three-quarters of an inch. Brookings saw 1.64 inches for the same time period. Medford sees an average of about 1.48 inches through Jan. 17, but by the early afternoon, weather officials had documented 1.81 inches for the month thus far. Rain is expected continue throughout the week. "We're going to have several systems coming into southern Oregon and the Rogue Valley this week, but there will be breaks in between each system, about half a day to a day between each," said meteorologist Brad Schaaf. The continued wet activity has weather officials on the lookout for rapid rises in area small streams and rivers. "Flooding of main stem rivers is not forecast, but small streams and creeks could exceed their banks," a Weather Service statement reads. "The exact scenario for flooding remains uncertain."
