Cowley goal boosts Phoenix boys to 2-1 victory HENLEY -- The Phoenix High boys soccer team has been involved in three tie games this season and was on its way to another when Sean Cowley knocked in the game-winning goal. Cowley scored from 10 yards out off an assist by Jesse Shorland, snapping a 1-1 tie and lifting the Pirates to a 2-1 victory. The goal came with just five minutes remaining in the second overtime. "This was a dramatic win for us," said Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner, whose team improved to 4-0-2 in District 6 play and 7-1-3 overall. "Those ties leave you with an empty feeling. A win feels much better and we thought we deserved it because we led most of the way." The Pirates grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick by Shorland. The infraction occurred when Cowley was taken down on a breakaway. The 1-0 advantage held until the 71st minute when Joe Salvati connected for the Hornets. "Our hearts sank when we gave up that goal," Flenner said. The Pirates nearly tallied in the opening seconds of the first 10-minute overtime period when Cowley took possession and fired a crossing pass to striker Masaya Yano. But Yano missed from point-blank range. Tony Machado registered eight saves in goal for the Pirates, who had a 22-14 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore sweeper Al Albright also had a strong outing for the Pirates. NORTH VALLEY 6, MAZAMA 0 -- At Klamath Falls, senior midfielder Casey Shaw had three goals and two assists to record North Valley's first hat trick of the season. The Knights held only a 1-0 halftime lead, but made some successful adjustments in the second period. Jeff Gauthier's goal off a through pass from Shaw accounted for the game's first goal. In the second half, Shaw scored on a header in the first minute, then added the Knights' final two goals. Matt Johnson and Matt Gentry also contributed goals. HIDDEN VALLEY 4, BONANZA 0 --At Grants Pass, Hidden Valley responded with the game's initial goal immediately after junior defender Colt Campbell was taken off in an ambulance because of a Bonanza foul at the Josephine County Fairgrounds. Matt Johnson headed in an indirect kick from 40 yards by Jon Wright at the 31st minute after the Campbell injury. Campbell was taken to the hospital and later released. The fired-up Mustangs scored again just before halftime on Kenny Pipher's goal off an assist by Garrett Drumond. Hidden Valley padded its lead in the second half with goals by Scott Palmer and Evan Cope. Junior defender Cody Borta provided strong defensive play in his first starting assignment for Hidden Valley. Mustang sophomore goalie Tim VanderStoel recorded his sixth shutout of the season. ST. MARY'S 9, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 -- At Cave Junction, Kawika Victor scored four times and goalkeeper Andrew Lunt made sure each varsity player has scored a goal for St. Mary's this season in District 6 action. After Thatcher Jones put the Crusaders up 1-0 two minutes into the game off an assist by Brian Staver, Victor posted the next three goals for St. Mary's at the 10th, 17th and 21st minutes. Gabe Shonerd earned the assist in the 10th minute, with Staver assisting the other two efforts. Jones added a goal in the 25th minute off an assist by Shonerd, while Victor closed out his scoring in the 31st minute on a pass from Staver. Shonerd added a penalty kick goal at the 36th minute as St. Mary's managed a 7-0 halftime lead. Shonerd scored again at the 44th minute on an assist by Will Kongma, and Lunt capped the scoring with a penalty kick in the 54th minute. Lunt had missed a similar penalty kick earlier this season, but finally came through to give each varsity player at least one goal this season. Lunt also posted his eighth shutout of the season in helping St. Mary's improve to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in District 6 play. Illinois Valley (2-6) dropped its league mark to 1-4. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2, ROGUE RIVER 1 -- At Jacksonville, Cascade Christian received goals from Peter Lopez and Ryan Plummer in a match that saw all the scoring take place in the first half. Lopez scored 19 minutes into the game, then Plummer converted from near the net off an assist from Jared Friend at 34 minutes. Rogue River freshman forward Travis Yawn cut the Chieftain deficit to 2-1 just before the end of the first half. The Challengers (5-3, 3-2 District 6) dominated the first half, but the Chieftains came on strong after intermission despite not scoring another goal.
