(Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli) T-storms rattle valley From staff reports Thunderstorms swept across Jackson County Monday afternoon, prompting a flash flood warning from the National Weather Service. Pounding rain from a string of thundershowers drenched a swath of the county, filling gutters with water and sending pedestrians scrambling for shelter. A farmer reported to the National Weather Service office in Medford at 2:35 p.m. that the South Fork of Jackson Creek south of Jacksonville was flooding agricultural fields, meteorologist Mike O'Brien said. The weather service issued a flash flood warning about five minutes later, warning residents along creeks near Ruch, Jacksonville, Gold Hill, Central Point and eastern Applegate to head for higher ground. The warning remained in effect until 4:15 p.m. By late afternoon storm activity was dying out in Jackson County as the wild weather moved north, O'Brien said. Public works officials around the county said that storm drains handled the cloudburst handily and no serious flooding was reported. The storms delivered about 100 lightning strikes an hour for nearly four hours in Southern Oregon and Northern California, O'Brien said. Weather service rain reports from around the region ranged from .18 of an inch on Evans Creek to .25 of an inch at the Medford airport to .8 of an inch in Grants Pass and Central Point. O'Brien said a low-pressure system offshore delivered the moist, unstable air that caused thunderstorms across the region. The most volatile part of the system hit Jackson County Monday, he said. The chance of scattered storms here decreases to 30 percent today and should disappear entirely by Thursday, the forecast said.
