Further, the 10 amendments contained in the Bill of Rights are integral to the Constitution and cannot be repealed or compromised in any way, shape or form. This especially applies to the Second Amendment. The phrasing of the Second Amendment contains the word “regulated.” In the English parlance of the 18th century, regulated meant “skilled,” “highly trained” and/or “disciplined”. Lexington and Concord, April 19, 1775 was the first armed confrontation between the colonial militia and British troops. The conflict erupted when British soldiers fired upon militia when they refused to give up their arms. Regarding the national crime rate, the United States ranks third in murders throughout the world. But if you take out Chicago, Detroit, Washington, D.C. and New Orleans, the United States is fourth from the bottom for murders. These four cities also have the toughest gun control laws in the United States. Over the past years gun sales have skyrocketed, but homicides with firearms are down 39 percent during that time, and “other crimes with firearms” are down 69 percent. Australia’s gun confiscation in 1996, which was extolled by the president, did not significantly decrease crime. Brian A. Cavallo Eagle Point Pot smell disgusting Thanks to A.E. Walker (Sunday, Nov. 1 ) for saying what many of us are disgusted by, the stink of pot in the air. I moved to this property 10 years ago when there were no growers nearby. Four years ago there was only one grower. Now there are five nearby. All I smell is pot wafting on the breeze at almost any time of the day, but in the evening it is especially strong. The smell resembling skunk indeed does ruin an otherwise nice evening on the porch. I just hope everyone who thought pot is a good idea has the "pleasure" of living close to a growth. Steve Wiley Gold Hill Life trumps LNG Exxon and a few other fossil fuel entities knew what they were doing as they spent millions campaigning against science. They knew what they were doing when they purchased legislators and when they invested in media marketing of their propaganda. They knew that fossil fuels created global warming back in the late seventies & early eighties…but they chose greed over life. In essence, they knowingly promoted the pathway towards human extinction. Our current crop of Jackson County commissioners all seem among the gullible duped that drank Exxon’s Kool-Aid, while Rep. Greg Walden seems to have completely sold out. Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden fight for climate action yet paradoxically and incongruously promote destructive fossil fuel exports. We need elected representatives at all levels who both understand science and are willing to stand up to the fossil fuel industry and their filthy lucre. Coal, oil and natural gas all produce the greenhouse gases we can no longer afford. The cost of global warming is mounting; it is writ both in lives and dollars. Proliferation of fracked natural gas, pipelines and LNG has the potential to ensure our extinction. Gov. Kate Brown could stop this insanity.
