JOSEPHINE COUNTY Medford hunter falls to his death in the woods Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 5, 2015 at 6:00 PM Posted Oct. 5, 2015 at 6:00 PM » Social News Local report A 41-year-old Medford man who was on a deer-scouting mission in a remote part of eastern Curry County died when he fell off a cliff Friday night, authorities said. Jeffry Withrow was pronounced dead at the scene early Saturday morning near the Tucker Flat Campground near the Rogue River outpost of Marial and adjacent to the Wild Rogue Wilderness Area inside Curry County, according to the Josephine County Search and Rescue team. Withrow was part of a four-person groups camping at the flat and scouting deer on the eve of Saturday's opening day of the black-tailed deer rifle season, search and rescue Deputy Cory Krauss said. Withrow excused himself from the group about 9:45 p.m. and walked into nearby bushes, Krauss said. He fell off a 60-foot cliff, where he was discovered and rendered aid by members of his group, Krauss said. The party included his wife, according to the Grants Pass Daily Courier. Krauss said Withrow's body was roped up the cliff beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday. Withrow was camping with his wife and another couple at the remote campground along Mule Creek, near Marial Lodge, about 55 river miles downstream of Grants Pass along the Rogue River. Mule Creek runs through a gorge that ends near the campground. Krauss said that shortly after Withrow walked away, the group thought they heard something. When they looked over the edge they saw Withrow lying along the creek. Josephine County search-and-rescue teams were called in because they are closer than Curry County teams in Gold Beach, Krauss said. Krauss' team reached the scene about 2 a.m. Saturday and Withrow was pronounced dead, Krauss said. Curry County sheriff's deputies are conducting the death investigation, Krauss said.
