The National Weather Service office in Medford said close to an inch of rain has fallen in Ashland over the past 24 hours, while Medford saw 0.76 inches. About 0.9 inches fell outside Jacksonville during the same time period, while close to three quarters of an inch fell in White City. Howard Prairie saw 1.28 inches, while Big Red Mountain saw about 2. "They were our big winners," said meteorologist Brad Schaaf. Snow has fallen on several higher elevations around the valley, including Dead Indian Memorial Road and Highway 140. Big Red Mountain, which Schaaf said typically sees comparable amounts of snowfall to Mount Ashland, has received about 3 inches of new snow over the past 24 hours. But more snow is likely en route, with another system expected to push into southwest Oregon Friday. That system brings a chance for more rain on the valley floor and snow levels dropping to the passes. Mt. Ashland Ski Area officials say they hope to open the mountain Saturday, but that significant snowfall is required to make that happen. Rain depleted three inches of the mountain's snowpack Wednesday, though weather officials have said the inbound storm system could dump multiple feet of snow on the mountain's peak. "Nothing leads us to believe at this time that we will not be opening soon, we simply cannot guarantee we will hit our target date of this Saturday the 12th of December," a Facebook post from general manager Hiram Towle reads. Officials should be making an official announcement later today, the post reads, and opening day could be postponed to Sunday if Saturday doesn't pan out. The ski area's mountain web camera showed light snow falling early Thursday morning. Overnight wind gusts got up to 87 mph on Squaw Peak, while 39 mph gusts were recorded in Medford. Pacific Power reported 1,389 customers remain without power in the Applegate-Grants Pass area, though officials said power should be restored by 8 a.m. Spokesman Tom Gauntt said the transmission interruption that sparked the outage was due to overnight storm activity.
