Nick Janakes scored on touchdown runs of 16 and 47 yards in the opening period to put the third-ranked Black Tornado ahead for good, 12-6. North (4-0, 2-0 SWC) led 20-6 at the end of the first quarter. “We didn’t start with the emotion I would have liked,” North Medford coach Mike Mitchell said. “It kicked into gear about halfway through the first quarter and we started being us.” Jared Evans caught an 11-yard TD pass from quarterback Troy Fowler with 1:34 remaining in the second period, then six seconds later Josh Hansen, scooped up an Axeman fumble and went 12 yards for a touchdown to give the Black Tornado a 48-6 halftime lead. After North took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored three plays later on a Fowler 31-yard pass to Isaac Grether, Mitchell pulled the starters. “We played almost everybody we took on the trip,” said Mitchell. Zac Hannan returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a score and also threw a TD pass to go with 65 rushing yards for Grants Pass (4-0, 2-0 SWC). Ben Dean added 60 yards rushing and two TDs on 13 carries to help the Cavemen outgain Thurston (1-3, 1-1), 598-208. Crater (2-2) scored on its first two possessions and built a 29-0 second-quarter lead. The Comets went 64 yards in six plays to score after taking the game’s opening kickoff. An 11-yard TD pass from Struck to Dylan Morgan completed the drive. On Crater’s next possession, Cavin Gillispie scored from 1 yard out when Crater marched 60 yards in 10 plays. Struck was 30 of 39 passing with one interception. Jake Ireland led the receiving corps with nine catches for 172 yards and one touchdown. Spencer Cyr caught six passes for 115 yards and Morgan had 91 yards on seven receptions and two touchdowns. The Comets, who had 502 yards in offense, held Eureka to a total of 283. Ryne Robitz ran for 141 yards and one touchdown for the Grizzlies (4-0) while Weinberg rushed for 98 yards and also completed 24 of 37 passes for 245 yards. Weinberg’s 19-yard TD pass to Michael Pruitt with 7:27 to play trimmed Ashland’s deficit to 14-13. The Grizzlies outgained Ridgeview, 511-322, in total offense but were slowed by five turnovers (three fumbles, two interceptions).
