Schachtsick struck out six of the first eight batters he faced and eight overall in just four innings of work to lead North Oregon to a 9-2 victory over Upper Rogue in a first-round, pool-play game at the Pacific Northwest Regional Babe Ruth Tournament for 15-year-olds at the Yard. In other opening-day games Thursday, Alberta, Canada romped to a 9-2 win over Idaho, South Washington cruised to a 9-3 victory over Wyoming, and North Washington posted a 9-4 win over British Columbia. Schachtsick, plagued by arm problems much of the summer, held Upper Rogue hitless until Francisco Aranda beat out an infield single with two outs in the third. He then tired, yielding three hits, two walks and two runs in the fourth, but by then North Oregon, whose players hail from Pendleton, had a 6-0 lead and was well on its way to its 12th victory in 13 games since coming together as an all-star team. Advertisement "I think this was only the fifth game I’ve pitched this summer," Schachtsick said. "It felt good to get out there in a big game and do well, but I got tired in the fourth inning." Randy Wilson replaced Schachtsick in the fifth and held Upper Rogue to just one hit the rest of the way. "The game plan was to throw (Schachtsick) four innings regardless of how he did — we don’t want to wear him out," North Oregon coach Greg Whitten said. "He was tough in those early innings. He was throwing hard and he had a nice curveball to go with it." Upper Rogue pitcher Jesse Keesee didn’t fare too badly himself. He threw a five-hitter, but he also hit five batters and his teammates committed five errors, crippling any hope of the host team pulling out a victory. Keesee hit four batters in the first inning alone and Upper Rogue third baseman Aaron Grissom committed a costly error, enabling North Oregon to jump to a 4-0 lead. North Oregon’s only hit in the frame was a leadoff infield single by Schachtsick. North Oregon boosted its lead to 6-0 in the third on an RBI single by Kyle Humphreys and a squeeze bunt by Dan Strailey. Upper Rogue struck for its only two runs in the top of the fourth when Grissom, Austin Owens and Daniel Varner hit consecutive singles off a tiring Schachtsick to load the bases. Kyle Miers and Aranda followed with bases-loaded walks that forced in the runs. North Oregon blew the game open with three runs in the fifth, taking advantage of two more Upper Rogue errors, a walk and an RBI single by Winston Worden. "We helped them out with the hit batters and the errors," Upper Rogue coach Steve Harvey said. "Keesee was trying to find the inside corner in that first inning and he kept hitting people. "Take away the first inning and it’s a tight game, but our biggest problem was a lack of hits. We struggled offensively." North Oregon helped its cause by stealing seven bases, including two each by Schachtsick and Humphreys. North Oregon meets South Washington at 1 p.m. today while Upper Rogue takes on Montana at 7 p.m. Today’s other games find Alberta playing British Columbia at 10 a.m. and Idaho meeting South Oregon at 4 p.m. Upper Rogue............................000 200 0 — 2 5 5 North Oregon..........................402 030 x — 9 5 0 Keesee and Harvey; Schachtsick, Wilson (5) and Whitten.
