In the picture on the left side there is an airliner. What's the story on an airliner being in West Manhattan? -- Earl S., via e-mail That does look rather odd, doesn't it, Earl? But the ship is just one part of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, and that plane — the Concorde AD that made the fastest-ever crossing of the Atlantic at 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds — is part of the museum's large collection. The plane's first flight was in 1976 and its last flight was in 2003. Also on display next to the Concorde and Intrepid is the USS Growler SSG 577, the only intact strategic diesel powered submarine equipped (formerly) with nuclear missiles, commissioned in 1958 and parked in 1964. The museum also features about 25 other aircraft on display on and inside the aircraft carrier, including a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber like those the Intrepid originally hosted in World War II and a Blackbird spy plane, a MiG 21 and a group of helicopters.
