Southridge certainly qualifies as a quality team, having won the state baseball title two years ago when most of its current stars were sophomores. And a third-inning snafu for South Medford Thursday qualified as that one back-breaking moment as the Panthers lost 10-5 at Miles Field. "That’s where the game turned for us," South Medford coach Steve Antich. "So far this season, we’ve had that one bad inning, and that’s what really got us today." Southridge loaded the bases with one out by slapping three straight singles in the third. Advertisement South starter Tim Holtz forced the next batter into hitting a comebacker to the mound, but a potential inning-ending double play was thwarted when Holtz bobbled the wet ball and committed one of South’s four errors with an errant throw. Southridge went on to score six runs in the inning for a 6-0 lead. "We could not have hoped for a better result in that spot," said Antich. "Nine times out of 10, Timmy Holtz makes that play. Today was just that one time, and against a squad like Southridge, you just can’t extend innings." South (4-1) rallied with a solo home run by Andy Narus in the bottom of the third and a four-run barrage in the sixth that closed the gap to 8-5, but it was to no avail. In the Panthers’ sixth, Dan Chancler reached on an error to start the inning, then moved to second on a one-out walk to Holtz. Logan Boyd followed with an RBI single, and Tyler Heil plated another run with a sacrifice fly. After a single by Ben Koziol, Justin Meyer belted a two-run double to finish off the frame. "Our kids still finished strong and kept their heads in it to the end," said Antich. "Even though we don’t feel great about the way we played and absolutely give credit where credit’s due to an excellent Southridge team, we feel like we’ll make the plays we didn’t today." Heil and Narus each had two hits to pace the Panthers. Southridge’s all-star shortstop, Darwin Barney, who along with starting pitcher Rob Summers has signed to play next year at Oregon State, was 3-for-4. CRATER 13, OREGON CITY 3, 5 inn. — At Central Point, Crater notched its first win on the strength of a 10-run fourth inning in the nonconference contest. The Comets (1-2) started the big inning with runners reaching on an error and two walks, then produced six hits before the onslaught ended. Dan Whitehead, who was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, ripped a two-run home run to highlight the frame. He also had an RBI double in the second. Jeff Weise was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Comets, and Jesse Bailey, who had two RBIs, and Sean Teaters each had two hits. Teaters was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits, striking out five and walking three in four innings. Crater is host to North Salem at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Grizzlies (4-0) finished their own eight-team tournament with a 3-0 mark. Hegdahl struck out 10 and walked just one in his first outing of the season. The left-hander also went 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs. Micah Weston and Steve Jorgensen each added two RBIs and Ashland had eight different players collect a hit. FOREST GROVE 7, EAGLE POINT 6, 8 inn. — At Eagle Point, Forest Grove scored two runs in the top of the eighth, then held off Eagle Point in the bottom half to claim the nonconference victory. Forest Grove scored twice in the eighth, benefitting from a lead-off error and a two-run home run from CodyNorbury for a 7-5 advantage. In the bottom half, Logan Rock singled and Kyle Snyder walked for Eagle Point (2-3), and Juan Almaraz’s bunt moved them to third and second. Ryan Augino’s sacrifice fly scored Rock and moved Snyder to third, but Ricky O’Callahan’s grounder to shortstop ended the game. Joe Miller was 3-for-4 with a double for the Eagles, and Rock and Augino were each 2-for-4 with two runs. Augino also had three stolen bases and an RBI. Eagle Point had to rally in the sixth inning, scoring twice to knot it at 5-5. Nick Staller and Rock both singled and moved up on a passed ball. They scored when Almaraz hit a grounder and the shortstop threw the ball away. Softball ASHLAND 2-6, HILLSBORO 4-5 — At Ashland, Amanda Cardoza went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in Game 2 to help Ashland salvage a split of the nonconference doubleheader. The Grizzlies (3-2) scored two runs in the second and third innings, then held on for the rain-shortened, six-inning win. Alysse Carlson had two hits and scored twice in the nightcap. Hillsboro pounded out nine hits in the opener and took advantage of five walks issued by Ashland. Grizzly pitchers combined to walk nine batters over both games of the twin bill.
