"We realized we've got floodwater coming into the home," she said. It wasn't the first time she and her husband, Chris, had to battle flooding at their Offord Circle home off Hueners Lane. The couple's yard had flooded three years ago, but Sixkiller said this time was much worse. In the aftermath of a torrential rainstorm that toppled trees, closed roads and cut power in some areas of the valley, water that collected in the couple's yard had begun seeping under their sliding glass door and into crawlspaces. The water eventually made it into the bedroom. Standing in her driveway, dressed head to toe in rain gear, Sixkiller said she didn't know the extent of the damage. "I haven't been in the house for the past four hours," she said. Sixkiller said the couple used everything they could find in their backyard and storage sheds in an attempt to divert water. "We're blessed with neighbors to help, and friends," she said, standing by a giant pile of sand and gravel the Sixkillers had purchased to fill about $400 worth of sandbags. Despite the potential damage, the mood on Offord Circle was mostly upbeat, as dozens of friends and neighbors scrambled to place sandbags and redirect water now streaming into the street from the Sixkillers' backyard gate. "(Belongings) are replaceable — lives aren't," she said, smiling. "Life throws stuff at you ... you deal with it the best you can." Capt. Jeremy Valdez of the Jacksonville Fire Department said firefighters responded to about seven homes that were affected by flooding, including the Offord Circle residence. Valdez said an irrigation canal that runs through the area between Beverly Way and Offord Circle was the cause of much of the flooding. Firefighters don't have an official estimate of the damage caused, but Valdez said a number of the homes suffered damage after water had entered crawlspaces.
