SOU student body plans `teach-in' on world trade The Associated Students of Southern Oregon University will host a day-long "teach-in" on the World Trade Organization and Multilateral Agreement on Investments. The free event is planned for Tuesday at the Stevenson Union Arena. Keynote speaker is Ruth Caplan, director of Alliance for Democracy. The teach-in is designed to educate the public on how the WTO and MAI may limit the rights of cities, states and nations to control business and trade within their borders. The schedule of speakers is as follows: 1 p.m.: Don Kegley of Spokane, Wash., a United Steelworkers of America member who has been "locked out" of his job with Maxxam's Kaiser Aluminum for more than a year. 2 p.m.: Paige Fischer of Oakland, Calif., a timber trade campaigner with Pacific Environment and Resources Center in Oakland. 3 p.m.: Jim Jontz of San Francisco, a former congressman and executive director of American Lands Alliance. 4 p.m. Tim Nesbitt of Portland, newly elected president of Oregon AFL-CIO. 5 p.m.: Street Theater presentation. 6:30 p.m.: "High School MAI," an award-winning video from Working TV of Vancouver, Wash. 7 p.m.: Ruth Caplan of Washington, D.C., who will address the dangers of the WTO/MAI. 8 p.m.: Panel discussion with Caplan and the other presenters; audience participation is encouraged. Several other local activities are planned before the World Trade Organization meets in Seattle Nov. 29 through Dec. 3. On Oct. 29, the SOU Student Film and Video Club will show a "McCollege" video at the arena; those interested in attending should phone 482-6988 for the time. On Nov. 18, the "Pros and Cons of WTO" will be discussed at 6 p.m. the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Fourth and C streets in Ashland.
