Under the May 27 agreement, Monical consented to have his case transferred to U.S. District Court in Medford and to plead guilty to the 2010 robberies of Banner Bank in Walla Walla, the U.S. Bank at the Columbia Center Mall in Kennewick and the Sterling Savings Bank in Spokane. Monical, 44, faces three counts of armed bank robbery and two counts of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime in the Medford court under an indictment filed in August 2013. The indictment charges him with the 2010 robberies of two Sterling Savings banks in Medford and Klamath falls and a Bank of America branch in Redmond. He also faces a single count of bank robbery in the U.S. District Court for Idaho under an indictment charging him with the August 2010 robbery of a Bank of America in Coeur d'Alene. In a June 4 motion for a continuance, Monical's attorney, Ashland lawyer Terry Kolkey, wrote that the parties involved had reached an agreement for each of the three cases to be resolved with a plea in the Medford court, where Monical's trial had previously been continued five times. His change of plea in Medford has been set for 1:30 p.m. June 29. He's already serving a 34-year state prison sentence following convictions for escaping from Jackson County Jail in November 2012, the December 2010 robbery of the PremierWest Bank in Ashland and the April 2011 robbery of a Sterling Savings Bank in Coos Bay. Monical's escape, which occurred while he was awaiting trial for the Ashland robbery, happened when he climbed through an unsecured mesh panel on the jail's rooftop exercise yard and leaped onto a nearby tree. In response to Monical's escape, then-Sheriff Mike Winters ordered the exercise area's roofing replaced with solid bars and had the trees surrounding the jail cut down. Monical was recaptured by deputy U.S. marshals nearly a year later in Oregon City. Reach reporter Thomas Moriarty at 541-776-4471 or [email protected] .
