Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 18, 2005 Wrong-way driver on I-5 leads to head-on collision Three people were hospitalized Thursday afternoon after a head-on collision on Interstate 5 near Central Point. Witnesses told police that at around 2:08 p.m. the driver of a Ford Focus looked confused as he tried to negotiate the Exit 33 interchange. The driver, 93-year-old Rudolph Lingenfelder, then turned his car onto the exit heading the wrong direction, Oregon State Police Sgt. Mark Byrd said. The Focus traveled about one-half a mile southbound on the interstate before colliding with a northbound Toyota pickup. The cars came to rest in the northbound lane, blocking traffic, Byrd said. The driver of the pickup, Daniel Hammond, 27, of Central Point was taken by Mercy Flights ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center where he remained late Thursday in fair condition, officials said. Gold Hill-residents Lingenfelder and his 94-year-old wife were also taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center. He remained hospitalized in serious condition; she was listed in fair condition, officials said. Oregon Department of Transportation crews closed the northbound for around two hours during the cleanup. "Were there any fatalities?: No," Byrd said of the crash. "Were we lucky: yes." OSP were assisted on the scene by Medford police and Jackson County Fire District 3 crews.
