From the recent concerns over large electronic signs, flat-roofed sterile buildings (Jackson County health services) the rusty bridges and the new police station, it seems more people need to be involved in the process. I wonder if others would agree. We will be left with the results for a very long time. — L. Decker, Central Point We detect a little editorializing in your comments, L. Decker. And, you’re right, quite a few people have commented on signs and buildings in Medford. As to your question, the city of Medford has quite a few people looking at plans for buildings. The Site Plan and Architectural Commission has seven members, including an architect, a contractor and an engineer. The Planning Commission has eight members. Also, there’s eight councilors and the mayor who also weigh in on some of the architectural decisions in Medford. We also notice you live in Central Point, so you wouldn’t be eligible to sit on any of these commissions. However, L. Decker, any resident in the area can speak before these commissions and the City Council. Just to let you know, the city did ask Walmart to add some extra features to its south Medford store to add some architectural details to it. Other cities, most notably, Ashland, have taken additional steps that have blocked construction of big box stores and severely limit electronic signs. For instance, many of the buildings you are concerned about have been heavily discussed by Medford officials. The best bet for anyone concerned.
