Bombs damage surplus business WHITE CITY -- Swede and Sons military surplus store was closed most of Monday after two pipe bombs exploded at the store late Sunday, blowing out the front window. Investigators from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and the Oregon State Police collected evidence at the store Monday and shipped it to the state crime lab for analysis. A passing motorist told deputies that two explosions occurred about 11:15 p.m., five seconds apart, according to sheriff's Lt. Dewey Patten. No suspects or motives in the vandalism have been identified, Patten said. The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to call detective Hugh Crawford at 774-6815. Investigators found remnants of the bombs just outside the store's front door. Swede Hastings, the store's owner, said the front window was blown out and that both the ceiling and some merchandise were damaged by flying glass. He wasn't sure how much it would cost to repair the damage and replace the merchandise. The store remained closed until about 3:45 p.m. Monday. Since it opened in March 1997, the store has been the target of several criminal acts, including a burglary last August. Hastings said he had no idea what might have spurred Sunday's attack.
