Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 27, 2005 Since you asked Two locals now work at National Geographic I was recently perusing a copy of National Geographic when I saw that one of the editors was Bert Fox. Is this the same Bert Fox who years ago was a photographer for the Tribune? His photos were always fascinating. In my humble opinion he was the best photographer the Trib ever had. — via e-mail Heck, the Rogue Valley practically OWNS the National Geographic these days. Not only is former Mail Tribune Photo Editor Bert Fox their illustrations editor, but Medford native and Crater High grad Chris Johns is the king of the whole production as editor-in-chief. Saying Fox was the best photographer the Trib ever had still says a lot about our current photo staff. Led by Photo Editor Bob Pennell, Roy Musitelli and Jim Craven are regular winners in journalism contests that pit them against some of the best news photographers in the nation. We peasants who cobble words and sentences together like wattle and daub admire their pretty images every day. And, no, they didn’t pay us to say that. A few doughnuts may have been involved, though. Fox joined the Mail Tribune in 1978 and was in 1982, at age 30, recognized as the nation’s top photo editor in a contest sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Journalism, the National Press Photographers Association and Nikon Inc.
