HVs Johnson earns top honors Matt Johnson was a scoring machine in boys soccer the past two seasons for Hidden Valley. Johnson, who helped the Mustangs to a 16-1 record and the state championship, netted the states top boys Class 3A/2A/1A individual award when he was selected as player of the year. South Medfords Craig Tomlins was a boys first-team all state selection in Class 4A and Jessica Friedman of North Valley was chosen to the girls state first team in Class 3A/2A/1A. Klamath Union speedster Sam Gilbert was a girls Class 4A first team selection, while Luis Garcia was a first-teamer on the boys side for the Pelicans. Johnson had 32 goals and 15 assists for the Mustangs this year. Over the past two seasons, Johnson accounted for 61 goals. Tomlins, a sweeper for South Medford the past three years, was the 2000 Southern Oregon Conference player of the year. Tomlins was the fourth-leading scoring on the Panthers undefeated SOC champion team. South bowed out in the second round of the state playoffs to Westview. "Craig is a totally complete soccer player," South Medford coach Dave Potter said. "Hes very intellectual and extremely composed. Mentally he was always in the game. When the ball was at his feet something positive was going to happen." Friedman, a senior forward, was part of a high-octane scoring duo for North Valley. Friedman tallied 24 goals and 18 assists, while junior forward Malloree Enoch added 38 goals. Enoch was a state second-team choice. "The thing I liked about Jessica is she anticipated instead of reacted to the ball," North Valley coach Gary Enoch said. "She kept herself in a good position." North Valley, which won District 6 girls with an 8-0 record before falling to state finalists LaSalle 3-2 in overtime, also received a third-team selection in senior midfielder Andee Trader. Hidden Valley senior defender Scott Palmer and junior goalie were picked on the second team. Phoenix was represented on the boys Class 3A third team by senior defender Lane Munroe and junior sweeper Al Albright, while Pirates junior midfielder John Hendricks was an honorable mention selection. In girls, Phoenix senior Annie Kulig was chosen to the third team with Emily Smith of St. Marys, while South Medfords Kathleen Narus was a Class 4A honorable mention pick.
