There was no way around it and we had to turn around disappointed and empty-handed. Is this a permanent closure and, if not, when is access going to be returned to normal? —Mick, Jacksonville What's going on, Mick, is that the bridge over the Middle Fork of the Applegate River on Forest Service Road 1040 is so deteriorated and bug-infested that it's not safe for travel, according to the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Forest spokeswoman Chamise Kramer says a bridge inspection turned up significant weakening of the bridge's structural integrity, so traffic on it was immediately halted last week. The bridge is at milepost 3.9. It's blocked both ways. The bad news is that snow at higher elevation currently blocks other connecting roads that might get you to that little piece of morel heaven, so there is not yet an alternative route. The good news, however, is this closure will only remain through May 20, when the Forest Service will install a new temporary bridge and open traffic, Kramer says. —Send questions to “Since You Asked,” Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
