Mail Tribune 100, May 29, 1922 By Alissa Corman May 29, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago May 29, 1922 MEMORIAL DAY IN ASHLAND TO BE A BIG EVENT Ashland, May 29. — Plans for Memorial Day tomorrow indicate that the observance this year will be participated in generally. The world war has prompted a renaissance of the old patriotic spirit which the younger element, through American Legion channels, is developing to a great extent, reinforced most efficiently by the assistance of its auxiliaries locally. The plans for the day being with the legion’s decoration of the Memorial rock in Lithia Park, at 8:45 o’clock, from whence we will all assemble in the Plaza for the next step, which will be the “service to the unknown dead” by the Women’s Relief Corps on the waters at the entrance of the park at 9:30. The parade column assembles on the Plaza immediately following this service for the march to the Ashland cemetery, where the usual G. A. R. and W. R. C. memorial services will be held around the beautiful Memorial monument. Upon the conclusion of this service, there will be a ten-minute intermission for the purpose of visiting and decorating the graves, then the bugler will again sound assembly for the return march — to the band stand in the park (weather permitting) otherwise to the armory where we will be privileged to listen to an inspiring address by the Hon. C. M. Thomas. During the afternoon, committees will be sent to the Mountain View, Hargadine, Talent and Hill cemeteries for decoration purposes. No particular services have been planned for each individual cemetery, but all are to be visited. ... Transportation will be afforded veterans of the G. A. R., also members of the Women’s Relief Corps, who, due to physical infirmity, are unable to march to and from the cemeteries. Flowers are needed to typify the observance of Decoration Day. Owing to the lateness of the season blossoms are scarce. Roses are beginning to bloom, however, and by Tuesday morning it is hoped, with the prevailing fine weather to secure a bountiful supply. Anyone having flowers to contribute, will confer a favor by leaving them at the Chamber of Commerce early Tuesday morning. Preliminary to Memorial Day proper, the G. A. R., Women’s Relief Corps, and American Legion, united in services at the Congregational church on Sunday, May 28. At the Presbyterian church the subject was “A Day of Remembrance,” and at the Methodist church, the pastor paid a tribute to “Our Glorious Dead.” — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
