S. Bullis said this noon that the city council would be asked at its next regular meeting to approve of the railroad contract, and that satisfactory word had been received from the east regarding the securing of the rails, and other material. The delay in the approval of the contract was occasioned by the fear that rails could not be secured. A telegram was received this morning stating that a meeting of the board of directors had O. K.'d the order. All the details of the agreement have been agreed upon, and there will be no agitation about its final passage. It will then be put up to the vote of the people for final acceptance, after which the work of construction will begin. SCHOOL ELECTION HELD ON MONDAY The annual school election will be held on Monday, June 19, at 1:30 p.m. The election of a director and the voting of additional bonds will be the main questions. The bonds are for $8,000, which will be used to build four additional rooms at the Washington school building, which is to be made into a Junior high school. The basement will be enlarged, a new heating plant installed, equip a sanitary toilet and to repair other buildings in the school district. So far no candidates have been put forward for school director. Some discussion as to outside scholars attending the local high school has brought to light a school law which given any student whose district does not provide high school facilities, the right to attend any high school in the county. Their education is paid for by the county. ASHLAND AND VICINITY S. M. Garland, an attorney of Lebanon, offers a gold medal to competition in the Scio high school for the best composition in English. A bit of entertainment attaches to the prize owing to the fact that the medal is made of gold taken from the Santiam river. How about a medal at the local high schools next commencement, made of gold from the Ashland mine?
