Local snowboarders fare well at state championships Ryan Scott and Callie Laing of North Medford and Alex Hammerstrand of Grants Pass were the top local individual finishers at the Oregon Interscholastic Snowboarding Association State Championship March 1-2 at Mount Hood Meadows. Summit, a first-year high school in Bend, swept all the top individual and team events. Scott, a Black Tornado junior, finished second overall in the boys individual slopestyle, while Hammerstrand was runner-up in boys boardercross. Laing finished third in both girls events. Slopestyle is scored on height achieved and difficulty and performance of the stunt. Competitors perform aerobatic tricks, with two runs over three snow ramps. The highest individual score wins and the top four scores for each team are counted. Boardercross is a timed elimination downhill race, over ramps and through poles. Six competitors from the same team race all at once. The best four times are added for the team total. The boys slopestyle event was won by Ben Connors from Summit with a mark of 23.80. Scott scored a 22.40. Summit won the boys slopestyle state championship with a score of 82.30. Grants Pass placed fifth (68.40), South Medford was seventh (67.80) and Ashland was ninth (67.00). Laing had a third-place score of 15.60 in the slopestyle. Lisa Page of Summit won the event with a mark of 16.40. Summit won the girls team event with a combined score of 50.90. Ashland placed fourth at 39.60. Connors picked up his second individual victory in the boardercross. Connors' winning time was 26.64 seconds. Hammerstrand was second at 26.80 seconds.
