Grants Pass rolls past Black Tornado Friday Oct 14, 2016 at 2:00 AM Oct 14, 2016 at 11:58 PM GRANTS PASS — North Medford had difficulty with the explosiveness of Grants Pass in a pivotal Southwest Conference football game Friday. All five Cavemen touchdowns came from 30 yards or more en route to a 35-14 victory at Mel Ingram Field. “We’ve got to stop giving up big plays on defense,” said North Medford coach Mike Mitchell. “They had too many yards.” North Medford (4-3, 2-3 SWC) came into the contest hoping to move into third place, one-half game ahead of Grants Pass (5-2, 3-1) in the SWC standings. Instead, the Black Tornado dropped into fifth in the SWC — 1½-games behind the Cavemen, who have won three straight over North. Grants Pass opened the scoring on Alexander Jarvis’ 51-yard touchdown run with 6:27 left in the first quarter. Then Tayler Phillips hauled in an 80-yard TD reception from sophomore quarterback Blain Hobbs to take a 13-0 advantage with 6:53 remaining before halftime. Joey Hunter caught an 11-yard touchdown from Josh Robbins to cut North’s deficit to 13-6 by intermission. Grants Pass took command on a 51-yard touchdown dash by Cameron Castle in the third quarter, then added a 33-yard touchdown run by Vince Washington to take a 27-6 lead with 8:40 left in the game. The Black Tornado answered 20 seconds later on a 70-yard TD pass play from Robbins to Alex Janakes, but could never get any closer. “We were out of sync all night,” said Mitchell. “We just never got rolling.” The Cavemen controlled the game with its ground attack. Grants Pass rushed for 282 yards to just 70 for North and totaled 406 yards in offense to 278 for the Black Tornado Janakes led the Black Tornado in both rushing and receiving. The senior running back picked up 54 yards running and had four catches for 80 yards. “We didn’t take advantage of our opportunities,” said Mitchell. “We didn’t play the caliber of football we’ve been playing.” EAGLE POINT 64, NORTH EUGENE 33: At Eagle Point, Jaxson Jones and Anthony Gray scored three rushing touchdowns apiece as Eagle Point gashed North Eugene for 470 yards on the ground. Jones scored all three of his TDs in the second quarter, the first was a 61-yard run. He ran 18 times for 177 yards. On his way to 125 yards on just five carries, Gray’s first touchdown was a 70-yard scamper that put the Eagles (6-1, 4-1 Midwestern League) on the scoreboard in the first quarter. The Eagles’ Tanner Jostad added a 53-yard touchdown run and Dante Lallo returned an interception 81 yards for a touchdown. HENLEY 34, PHOENIX 6: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix was limited to just 174 total yards while Henley’s Kyle Hadwick tossed a pair of touchdowns to JT Overstreet en route to the Hornets’ Skyline Conference victory.
