On Tuesday, however, the Comets ended their drought with a 5-2 victory over Eagle Point in Midwestern League play. Crater senior Dylan Pearce struck out 11, walked three, hit three and allowed one hit in a complete-game outing. Pearce also went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Dylan Morgan was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Christian McCormick 2-for-3 with one run for the Comets (1-11, 1-3 MWL). “Obviously we’ve been struggling to find the win column so I’m just happy for our kids,” said Crater head coach Jay Campbell. “They’ve been working hard and stayed focused and it was nice to see them get rewarded with a win today. We’ve been in a lot of ballgames so it was nice to finally come out with a win.” Ryan Lorenz singled in the fifth inning for Eagle Point (2-10, 0-7). Lorenz joined Colin Shopp in scoring during a third inning spurred on by Crater miscues, including two errors, one walk and two hit batters. After Pearce opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third, Crater took control of the game with a four-run fourth inning that featured RBI efforts by Caine Smith, Jake Ireland and Morgan. MARIST 4, ASHLAND 2: At Eugene, Ashland senior pitcher Steen Fredrickson struck out five in six innings but Marist scored three runs in the first inning and led 4-0 before handing Ashland its first Midwestern League setback. Jose Perez had two hits to lead the Grizzlies (11-2, 6-1 MWL), who saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end. Marist starting pitcher Matt Haney held Ashland to one run in 4⅓ innings to pick up the victory for the Spartans (6-7, 4-3). Grants Pass (6-6, 3-4 SWC) led 3-0 in the second inning before Willamette (2-10, 1-6) eventually tied it in the fourth inning. D’Amico pitched 3⅓ innings of scoreless relief, allowing four hits, and also went 2-for-2 with one run for the Cavemen. PHOENIX 7, NORTH VALLEY 1: At Talent, pitcher Aaron Hutchison fanned 11 and walked two as Phoenix opened Skyline play victorious at Hagler-James Park. Hutchison (3-1) allowed an unearned run in the fifth inning, then worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the sixth. Dorian Mobley had two hits for the Pirates (5-5, 1-0 Skyline) and Ben Hague drove in three runs. Phoenix broke a 1-1 tie with six runs in the sixth inning. Knute Thompson went 2-for-3 for Cascade Christian (7-2, 1-0 SCL), with an RBI single in the second inning and RBI double in the sixth. Gus Klingbeil had a double for the Cougars (5-5, 0-1). MARY’S 8, LAKEVIEW 7: St. Mary’s pulled off a come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the seventh inning when Tanner Smith recorded the most important of his two RBIs with a walk-off single in the Southern Cascade League opener. Spencer McCabe went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and earned the pitching win for St. Mary’s (5-6, 1-0 SCL) after taking over in the sixth inning in relief of Tanner Smith. Softball GRANTS PASS 3, ROSEBURG 2: At Grants Pass, No. 9-hitter Brielle Doman came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single to allow Grants Pass to win in walk-off fashion in SWC play. Stephanie Norrick had two hits and scored twice for the Cavers (12-0, 7-0 SWC), while Amy Robinson struck out 11, walked two and didn’t allow an earned run. In the seventh, Halleigh Noga and Norrick hit consecutive singles and were advanced by a sacrifice bunt from Dalenna Bellum. After a strikeout by Roseburg (7-4, 5-2), Doman sent the game-winner over the shortstop’s head to plate both runners. Shaylee Ledesma, a freshman pitcher, went the distance for the Challengers (2-5, 1-0 SCL), striking out seven, walking one and surrendering two earned runs. Ledesma added a two-run single and had two walks. Mariah Miller led the Cascade offense with two hits, two RBIs and one run scored. For Illinois Valley (0-7, 0-1), Allison Primeau collected two hits.
