Nine games later and the Pirates still haven’t faltered. Brett Ellis led a 3-point shooting barrage with a 5-for-8 showing from behind the arc as the Pirates rolled to a 64-46 Skyline Conference victory over North Valley on Friday. Phoenix (14-1, 5-0 Skyline) nailed 10 3s and coach Kevin Dixon sat the starting unit the final 10 minutes of the game with the comfortable lead. The Pirates used a smothering press in the first half en route to a 30-21 lead, but pulled back defensively to a standard man-to-man in the second half and increased the advantage with a 24-9 run. Advertisement "Basically with us, it comes down to our defense," said Dixon, whose team scored 25 points off 22 North Valley turnovers. "We took off that press because we get a little scattered sometimes when we press and we weren’t getting much out of it. "When we went to just a halfcourt man defense (in the second half) we were able to really jump on them." The Knights scored just one point in the first six minutes of the third quarter as Phoenix built its lead. Ben Decuir, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, provided a much-needed presence in the paint with eight points and eight rebounds in his first varsity start. "We’re not real big so he’s one of our bigger guys," said Dixon of Decuir. "He’s really stepping up and playing well." Ellis finished with a game-high 17 points, Jason Lockett dished five assists and Chris Galligan grabbed six boards off the bench. ROGUE RIVER 69, LAKEVIEW 43 — At Lakeview, Ryan Girodat buried eight 3-point baskets and finished with a game-high 30 points to boost Rogue River to the Skyline Conference victory. Girodat hit his first six 3-point attempts and had 22 points at halftime. The 6-foot senior guard also had nine rebounds. Senior post J.T. Vaughn added 18 points and seven boards for the Chieftains (8-7, 3-2 Skyline). Nick Hayter led the eighth-ranked Mustangs (12-2, 4-0 Skyline) with a game-high 18 points while younger brother Jordan Hayter added 11. Skyler Ogden chipped in 12 and Jared Delay 10 for Hidden Valley. Jeremiah Hernandez and Drew Reid each scored eight points to lead Mazama, which fell behind 18-3 in the opening quarter. The Mustangs won the rebounding battle 33-21 and forced 22 Viking turnovers. MAZAMA (44) — Hernandez 8, D.
