The Black Tornado (5-0) scored six runs over the first three innings to give returning all-conference pitcher Josh Suarez a comfortable lead. Catcher Darren Bruhns smacked a two-run homer in the second inning to push the Tornado lead to 3-0. Suarez legged out a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the third, and Abe Eubank led off the fifth with a solo blast. Tony Salamone went 3-for-4 with two runs, while Eubank added three hits and three RBIs. Suarez added a pair of hits to go with three RBIs, while Logan Odom and Bruhns also had two hits. Suarez struck out 10 and held David Douglas hitless until a two-out double in the fifth. SOUTH MEDFORD 6, BRIGHTON 3 — At Peoria, Ariz., Rick Imhausen blasted a three-run home run as South Medford concluded its Arizona road trip with a win. The Panthers (4-1) overcame a 2-0 deficit with Imhausen’s first homer of the season — a one-out shot to left field — in the second inning. Dan Chancler tripled and scored on an error to put South ahead in the fifth, while Taylor Comford and Chancler drove home the Panthers’ final two runs in the sixth with RBI singles. Chancler finished 2-for-4 to lead a nine-hit attack. Brighton High, from a suburb of Denver, managed just five hits against three Panthers hurlers. Freshman Griffin Boyd recorded his first pitching win and Tom George notched the save. CRATER 4, MARSHFIELD 1 — At Central Point, Chris Thomas pitched a three-hitter, struck out nine and walked one to lead Crater to the nonconference win. It was Thomas’ second victory in as many decisions. The Comets (3-2) scored a run in the fourth inning when Cory Staniforth’s sacrifice fly plated Josh Surgeon. An inning later, Crater scored three runs — two on a Jesse Bailey single and one on Tyler Schmidt’s single. Marshfield, which played Eagle Point earlier in the day, committed three of its four errors in the fifth. Bailey was 2-for-2, including a triple. Two of the Eagles’ hits came in the fourth inning, when they scored their only run. Ryan Augino and Nick Staller each singled, and Augino eventually scored on a passed ball. A.J. Nichols had Eagle Point’s other hit. Shasta Bateman went the distance for the Eagles, giving up 12 hits, fanning five and walking one. The Eagles had three double plays behind him. Ashland (2-3) got two hits each from Justin Meza, who also scored a run, and Gus Gaviglio. Sam Littleton had the Grizzlies’ lone RBI when he walked with the bases loaded in the first inning. Andrew Del Carlo, coming back from a sore shoulder, pitched three solid innings for Ashland, allowing one run on two hits. The Pioneers scored seven runs in the first inning — only one was earned — on three Caveman errors. Left-handed pitcher David Tinsley gave up just two hits in the complete-game shutout. Grants Pass (0-2) yielded only two earned runs but walked eight Oregon City batters. The Loggers (0-7) slugged out nine hits but had 12 errors in the opener. North Medford committed seven errors but used 11 hits and 11 runs over the final three innings to pull away. Chris Stephenson went 3-for-4 in Game 1 to lead Butte Falls.
