Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 16, 1915 Phoenix Horse Commits Suicide A two-year-old horse belonging to George Alford, a farmer living east of Phoenix, committed suicide in a peculiar manner Wednesday night. Some time during the night, the animal ran its head between the ropes of a swing used by Mr. Alford's children fastened to a limb of an oak tree in the pasture. Instead of backing out, the horse began to twist the rope around its neck. When discovered by Mr. Alford Thursday morning, the animal was dead, having been strangled.   Carload of REOs Received in Medford T.E. Pottenger, the local agent, has received the first carload of 1915 REO the Fifth, and they are at the Powell Auto company. you are invited to call and see them. Mr. Pottenger says the REO is up-to-date in every way, has more real value for the money than any car on the market, and lives up to the claim of being the incomparable four.   British Officer Rewards Chauffeur ASHLAND, April 16. — Vern Barnthous, who a few days ago inadvertently fractured the speed ordinance governing traffic over the Pacific highway by hustling in record time a passenger in order to overtake No. 14 at Medford, has just received the following letter from the Hotel Strathcona, Victoria B.C., under the date of April 11:  "I very much regret to learn that you were fined for exceeding the speed limit while doing me a favor. You will find inclosed a check for $5, trusting this amount will cover all costs." The letter is signed by A.C. Cartier, lieutenant Royal Canadian Guards. In his eagerness to render a favor, Vern overlooked speed limitations, which he recognizes must be observed. however, he views with pleasure the officer's appreciation of services rendered. His motorcycle is still capable of running like an "Indian," but hereafter will be kept on "intermediate" speed. As for the Canadian, it is lucky for him that he was not interned in Medford until the close of the war. This incident is now considered closed, and it is hoped it will not lead to further complications involving Secretary Bryan's peace policy with British regulations as interpreted through Canadian channels.
